turbo charging a 1600 on a low budget

Postby 5tua7t » Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:47 pm

thinking of turbo charging my 1303 up to about 90/100hp. but i thought it was miles to expensive but dave reckons i can do it pretty cheaply. anyone know of any small, cheap turbo's and where i can get one from? i've currently been looking at k03's form audi a4, and peugot 306 turbo's which you can get for around £50. so any suggestions? and what are all the parts i need to turbo?

If your going blow through You need a :-

GT15 or GT 20 blower or the like (size wise) - scrap yard me thinks but make sure it not foooked. Has to be oil cooled, not water and oil as you have no water!!
A waste gate actuator set to max 7psi (you can get aftermarket ones that you change the spring rate in to get the right boost)
Either a tuck away header or make something up out of a merged one to feed the turbo.
A oil feed pipe - ebay or hose suppliers can make one up for you. Feed it off the oil pressure switch outlet with a t piece.
A oil return pipe - fitting's off ebay and then you need to either feed it back into the sump/rocker cover if fitting the turbo down low or into a breather pipe if fitting the turbo high. The turbo has to be higher than the return pipe or you have to pump the oil back into the sump.
A 009 locked out to advance no more than 24 deg at 3000+
A old style fuel pump (the rebuildable ones) or a electric one of a fuel injected car and a boost sensitve regulator to control it (demon tweeks - £50ish)- Mg metros had them too, but good luck finding one in a scrap yard!!
Exhasut box to suit.
Boost hose's

Draw through, much simpler but turbo position is limited and may require to either stand off the boot or cut holes in it.

Buggy header.
A Garrett T2 turbo fitted with a carbon seal kit (ebay).
Wastegate set to about 7 PSI
A big SU carb or Weber or Dellorto.
Inlet made up to fit to the turbo.
A decent fuel pump (60 gallons a hour is a good guide)
009 locked out to max 24 deg.
Oil feed and return pipes.
Exhaust pipework.
Boost hoses

Both list's are off the top of my head, there will be other bits.

Oh, and few set's of new undies for spares.

WHAT YOU REALLY NEED IS A COPY OF TURBOMANIA.

Read and fully understand this before buying anything parts wise.
